Copper Kettle
By Tricia Lloyd Waller
Copper kettle on his shelf,
on his fire
brimming full of waters bubbling waters boiling.
Pour them on to freshly picked and fragrant herbs
plucked at dawn from his pathetic plot.
Leave to stew and to steep - to separate.
Then anoint with wise and Wicken words.
Maybe prayers?
Maybe Spells?
Who can tell?
Beneath the stair beside your chair
sleek and sable squatting there.
Muscular grimalkin, parlour panther,
lurking low within shamanic shadow
satanic cat be you friend or foe?
Ephemeral fiend of the great golden
saucer eyes staring back up at you
distilling all into
ancient casks – gigantic tasks for little you.
You do not speak. Do not keep their childish hours.
Dwell instead inside your head within towers
of fermented fear.
They shout your name and
play their game – that you can never know!
For you are broken –
truly broken – a mere token
hardly there at all.
