Love, in my country

By Imam Sarafadeen

I was on my way to Lagos on Sunday morning,

where I had my attention being dragged away by the noise from the passengers, so I was forced to join the conversation.

They were talking about love.

They said, love is sweet,

Then I remember my neighbor who had to murdered his wife and sold her heart in order to be able to get the money to take care of their kids.

Love is peace

I remember my country where landlords could not even sleep in their homes because they were afraid of being attacked by their own shadows.

Love is unity

I remember my village where Chinedu, Audu and Wale had to fought everyday because they could not decide on whom to become the head.

Love is beautiful

I remember Zarah, a lady who couldn't get married because she lost her virginity to a black monkey that blitzed her in the farm.

Love never dies

I remember Mama Tobi who took her child to school in the morning and still waiting for her arrival even after she was told that her child had been abducted.

Love gives life

I remember Gloria who buried her brother in her heart because she couldn't believe that he was killed by the security for coming home late in the night.

An old man once told me,

Love is like a flower

When we look at it from afar, it is beautiful

But when we get closer to it, we will find out that it is just a pieces of leaf.

I believe that too, because in my country,

Love is nothing but a group of letters.
